If you see
deep water on the roadway, do not attempt to drive through. Turn
around or take another road.
In an emergency situation, however, your car might get into deep
water.
Act quickly if you drive or
plunge into deep water. A car often will float for just a few
minutes. The engine end of your car is heavier and might sink
first.
Take these actions if your car goes
into deep water:
1. Unfasten
your safety belt. Check your passengers, and have them unfasten
theirs.
2. Open
the window that is farthest out of the water. Power windows
might short circuit in the water, so open these windows
immediately.
3. Exit
promptly through the open window.
If the window
will not open, exit through a door. Do not panic if the door is
slow to open. Pressure will equalize water from outside the door
enters your car. You then can open the door.
When your car is underwater, some air will be trapped for a
brief time toward the highest point of the car. Try to get a
full breath or tow of air while locating a window or door that
is facing up. Open the window or door and leave your car.
If you become trapped in your car underwater, use something
heavy to break your widow and get out of the car. Also, turn on
your headlights. This step can help rescuers find your car more
quickly. Also, unfasten safety belts to better prepare for
rescue.
