Usually you have a
little warning that your engine is going to stop due to ignition
or fuel system failure. When engine failure occurs move out of
traffic to a safe place.
Follow these steps if your
engine stops suddenly:
· Shift
to NEUTRAL to keep moving when the engine first stops or
sputters.
· Begin
moving out of traffic toward the right shoulder. Turn on the
emergency flashers, Do
not brake, Use hand signals for slowing and changing lanes.
·
Try to restart the engine while you are moving, If
the engine starts, shift into a forward gear and proceed. If it
does not start, move safely onto the shoulder or to the curb
before stopping, if possible. Try again to start the engine.
If you can't move onto the shoulder or the curb, stop on the
roadway. Use your emergency flashers while trying to start the
engine.
·
If the engine still fails to start, raise the hood
and leave emergency flashers on to signal a breakdown. You and
your passengers should get out of the car. Stand safely off the
roadway to wait for help.
If your car becomes disabled in such risky locations as over
the crest of a hill or non a curve, set flares or other warning
devices to alert other roadway users.
You can move some stalled stickshift cars a short distance. Turn
the ignition switch to the "start" position with the clutch
pedal out and the transmission in FIRST gear. Engine failure
also affects the performance of power steering and power brakes.
You need more effort to steer and brake when the engine is not
running.
