Tires wear, even under ideal driving conditions.
All tires eventually need replacing. Many tire failures occur
when tires are very worn.
Tire Failure:
Take these actions when a tire blows out.
-
Grip the steering wheel firmly.
-
Ease up on the accelerator to slow the car.
Do not brake. Braking can cause the car to swerve more.
Let the car slow gradually.
-
Check traffic as you gain control of the car.
-
Drive off the roadway slowly, braking gently.
-
Turn on emergency flashers. Drive on the flat
tire until you find a safe and suitable place to stop. You
might ruin the tire, but stopping suddenly in traffic
could cause a collision.
Changing a Tire
Follow these steps
to change a tire:
1.
Park on a level spot away from traffic. Turn on the emergency
Brake.
3.
Set the selector lever
in PARK; use REVERSE in a stick shift car.
4. Set
the parking brake.
5. Block
the wheel that is diagonally opposite
the flat tire.
6. Ask
your passengers to get out of the car and move to a safe place.
7. Take
out the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench.
8.
Assemble the jack.
Position it under the car according to the instructions.
9. Jack
up the car partway. The flat tire should still touch the ground
firmly.
10.
Remove the wheel
cover, if one is one the wheel. Loosen the lug nuts.
11.
Jack up the car until
the tire completely clears the ground.
12.
Use the lug wrench to
remove the lug nuts. Place them in a safe place.
13.
Remove the wheel with
the flat tire. Place the wheel to the side.
14.
Mount the wheel with
the spare tire. Rock the wheel gently into position.
15.
Replace and tighten
the lug nuts.
16.
Lower the car and
remove the jack.
17.
Leave the wheel cover
off as a reminder to fix the flat tire.
